Midget, Youth, and Older
In this outline all ages are those calculated on December 31 of the year of competition
Midget athletes are 14 and 15 year old, Youth athletes are 16 and 17 years old, Junior athletes are 18 and 19 years old, and athletes in the Senior category are 20 to 34 years old.
The major Championships for these categories are all at the BC Track and Field Jamboree usually held in July. BC sends a team of 15 Midget athletes and 25 Youth athletes to the Canadian Legion Track and Field Camp (effectively a Canadian Youth and Juvenile Championship). Youth athletes can try out to qualify for the Canadian team sent to the World Youth Championships. Other meets that are of interest to athletes in these groups are the various Canadian Championships, the Western Canada Summer Games, and the Canada Summer Games.
Athletes concentrate on a small number of events (unless they are training for the multievents).
They have individualized programs depending on the events they wish to train for and their long term goals.
Other Meets of interest to these athletes may be found on the BC Athletics website: www.bcathletics.org and the Athletics Canada website: www.athletics.ca
