Volunteer to be an Official !
If you are wanting to support your child in the sport of Track and Field and would like to volunteer to be an official, read on ...
Brief Overview:
Track and Field officials are an integral part of any meet. Without these officials, our meets would not be as successful as they are. Officials provide the knowledge of the event(s) rules and procedures in accordance with the IAAF rule book. There are 5 levels of Officiating in Canada, with level 1 and 2 officials being regarded as a "generalist", Level 3 as a certified "Provincial" official, and level 4 and 5 as certified National officials. The levels attained are a reflection of the experience and qualification of an official.
A new "online module" series has recently been created for prospective participants wishing to become officials in the sport of Track and Field. The available modules are for levels 1&2, with subsequent modules being developed for the other three levels. These "online modules" replaces the classroom type presentations that were used in the past. Click on the following link to register to take a level 1 or a level 2 online module.

Athletics Canada Officials Training Program:
The standard training program for Track and Field Officials is set out by Athletics Canada and is consistent throughout Canada. Each province's governing body adheres to this program and trains their own officials in line with the A.C. Program. A certified official from BC would, therefore, have been trained as an Athletics Canada Official but be classified as a BC Athletics Official. A certified official from Alberta would be trained as an A.C. Official, but be classified as an Athletics Alberta Official, etc.

Former V.I.A.A. Officials Program:
The Vancouver Island Athletics Association had, in the past, developed its own "Hands On" training program which mirrored the earlier A.C. Officials Training Program. It has now been replaced by the new "Career Path to Officiating" model used by BC Athletics / Athletics Canada. Many thanks to Diana Hollefrund and Tom Dingle for starting the officiating initiative on Vancouver Island, and the creating the current club officiating duties model we currently use for our V.I.A.A. meet series.
